A Guide for Prospective Undergrad. Researchers

Joining the Bebek Lab:

Welcome to the Bebek Lab! We are excited to see your interest in joining our team. Our lab focuses on computational research, primarily in bioinformatics and systems biology. Here’s everything you need to know about applying and what to expect as a member of our lab.

About Our Lab

Our lab is a dry lab, meaning we focus on computational research 99% of the time. We develop algorithms and tools for analyzing large biomedical and social data, and we analyze large omics datasets through integrative omics tools.

Research Paradigms:

Algorithm and Tool Development: We create innovative algorithms and tools to analyze large biomedical and social datasets.

Omics Data Analysis: We perform integrative analysis of large omics datasets using in-house, public, and commercial tools.

Commitment and Expectations

Time Commitment: We require a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week.

Learning and Adaptation: You will need to learn and adapt to bioinformatics. Don’t worry, we will provide the necessary support and training.

Lab Meetings: Attendance at our weekly lab meetings is mandatory. These meetings are held every Wednesday from 1 pm to 2 pm.

Application Process

Due to the large number of applications, there might be delays in our responses. Please follow up to express your continued interest.

To apply as an undergraduate research assistant, please follow this guide:

Email Dr. Bebek and include:

  • A few sentences about who you are, your major, your intended level of time commitment, and why you are interested in this lab.
  • Your career goals (M.D., Ph.D., industry etc.)
  • Classes you have taken (include GPA, extracurriculars, etc. – this serves as an informal CV).
  • Any computational skills you have.

If there is a match, you will meet with Dr. Bebek to discuss projects and meet other lab members.

Preferred Background:

Most students in our lab have taken classes in computer science, statistics, and biology. Experience with at least one of the following programming languages: R, Python, Matlab. Exceptions are always considered, so don’t hesitate to apply even if you don’t meet all the criteria.

We look forward to receiving your application and potentially welcoming you to the Bebek Lab!
